In this episode of Legendary Pivots, Aditi, co-founder of The Arc, sits down with Abhiraj Singh Bhal, co-founder and CEO of Urban Company, to trace the decision that turned Urban Company into the organisation it is today. Urban Company launched as a tech-enabled services marketplace to connect customers to professionals, take a cut, and stay out of the delivery. But by the end of 2015, roughly a hundred companies were running the same playbook. Cohorts weren't retaining. Suppliers churned. And the model everyone had raised money on quietly stopped making sense. The fix started small: one category, beauty services at home. It was the only category where the cohorts went up. By the end of 2017, the company was running two businesses with two cultures, five full-stack categories producing half the revenue, and dozens of other marketplace categories producing the other half, and one had to be picked soon. Abhiraj is very direct about the delays he made, the evidence they had by mid-2017, and everything in between. If you're a founder sitting on evidence you haven't acted on yet, this conversation is about the cost of the months in between.
