I moved both plants into a heated room to overwinter last year and brought them back outside this spring, where they have remained until now. Temperatures didn't drop immediately at the start of autumn this year; only recently have the lows begun to approach 10°C. It is now time to prepare them for overwintering indoors. In addition to these two, I purchased a bougainvillea and a Brazilian jasmine this summer. These two are relatively more sensitive to the cold. Three of the four plants will be moved indoors immediately. The banana plant, however, has been sitting above a water basin and has accumulated a lot of water at the bottom of the pot; it needs to dry out for two or three days before being brought inside. Last year, the plants overwintering in the heated room suffered from two types of pests: aphids and spider mites. Coffee plants are highly resistant to both, whereas banana plants are more susceptible to damage from spider mites. When overwintering plants in a heated room, maintaining humidity is crucial; the leaves need to be misted occasionally to prevent spider mite infestations.
