You have seen college football mascots before. So when more than eighty thousand Oklahoma fans leap to their feet after a score, you expect a song, a flag, maybe somebody in a costume.
You do not expect two white ponies to burst onto the field pulling a covered wagon.
It is called the Sooner Schooner. Real horses, real wooden wheels, and real students send it racing across the grass while the stadium roars. The students beside it belong to the RUF NEKS, an Oklahoma organization dating back to 1915, and the tradition itself began in 1964 when a freshman named Mick Cottom became the first student trusted with the reins.
But the wagon did not begin as a marketing idea. It grew out of one Oklahoma family's memory of the prairie, then became tied to the words Boomer and Sooner, the land rush of 1889, generations of students, crashes, injuries, rollovers, and a 2019 accident that forced the university to decide whether the tradition should survive at all.
This is the story of why a nineteenth-century covered wagon still races through a modern football stadium, why Oklahoma rebuilt it with modern safety systems and hydraulic brakes, and why eighty thousand people still cheer when the tunnel opens.
