You have seen football crowds stand before kickoff. But probably never for a horse, a rider, and a burning spear. So the few minutes before kickoff at Doak Campbell Stadium are going to feel very strange. Florida State tells fans to be in their seats at least forty-five minutes early. Then, before the football team appears, people around you begin standing. You hear hooves. A spotted Appaloosa comes onto the field carrying a rider dressed in garnet and gold, holding a long spear with fire burning at the tip. He rides toward midfield while more than sixty-seven thousand people remain on their feet. Then he raises the flaming spear and drives it into the ground. The stadium erupts. The whole thing lasts only a few moments, but generations of Florida State fans have built part of game day around seeing it. This is the story of Osceola and Renegade, a Florida State tradition that began as Bill Durham’s idea in the 1960s and finally reached the field in 1978. Durham worked with coach Bobby Bowden and Seminole Tribe of Florida chairman Howard Tommie to shape the tradition, while 168 students applied to become the first rider. Jim Kidder became the first Osceola, riding Renegade I onto the field and planting the spear at midfield on September 16, 1978. Since then, six different horses and seventeen riders have carried the same roles forward. Subscribe for more of the American rituals Americans stopped noticing.
