Why Did They Abandon This Interstate

Interstate 44 once followed a very different path just outside Tulsa, Oklahoma. Then, in 2002, traffic was rerouted — leaving roughly a mile and a half of former Interstate pavement behind. This is the story of why I-44 was moved, what was wrong with the old Catoosa-area interchange, and how a major piece of America's Interstate system became an abandoned highway almost overnight.
