He Hired Her to Cook for 6 Men All Winter — He Didn't Know She'd Salted for Twelve Till Pass Closed On an October morning, Clara Voss stands on the steps of the freight office in Ridgeline, Montana, with a canvas satchel over one shoulder and a cast-iron skillet wrapped in burlap under her arm. After three days on two coaches for a cook's job twelve miles up the north slope, she hears Garrett Foss tell her, loud enough for the men at the livery post, that the position has been filled. Elias Alderman takes her up the mountain anyway, to a larder stocked for five months and a pass road that closes in November and sometimes stays shut into April. He hired her to cook for six men all winter, and he does not know she has salted for twelve until the pass closes under fourteen inches of snow. By February a rumor from town has reached the bunkhouse, and in March a land agent arrives with papers claiming the slope the crew has worked all winter. The folded Ridgeline Courier she has carried since October shows the agent's own name on the re-filing, stamped six weeks earlier. Alderman had already noticed the wire on the oven latch, the patched stovepipe, and a woman who reads everything she can get her hands on. Preparation does not ask for credit. It counts what is there before the road closes, and it is still standing in April. This story is presented for entertainment and historical storytelling purposes.
