Have you ever been genuinely happy about something in your life while your heart was breaking over something else? ❤️ If you’ve ever wondered how joy and grief can possibly exist at the same time, pull up a chair—you’re not alone.
Today, I’m feeling both.
My daughter is getting married soon, and I am so excited for her and her fiancé as they prepare to begin this new chapter together. There is so much happiness, anticipation, and love surrounding their wedding.
But just a couple of days ago, my sister had to say goodbye to her beloved pug, Bella. Bella was part of our lives for 11 years, and I loved her too. Watching my sister lose a little companion who meant so much to her—and feeling that loss myself—has been heartbreaking.
And it has me thinking about something we don’t always talk about: joy and grief don’t necessarily take turns. Sometimes they show up together.
We can celebrate a new beginning while grieving an ending. We can laugh and cry on the same day. We can be incredibly grateful for what’s ahead while deeply missing what we’ve lost.
Maybe we don’t have to choose which feeling we’re “supposed” to have. Maybe there’s room in our hearts for both.
I’m a 63-year-old teacher, mom of six (four adopted), divorced, and navigating autoimmune disease, weight struggles, family changes, loss, new beginnings, and all the complicated emotions that come with a real life. Here at Coffee, Chaos and Grace, I don’t pretend to have everything figured out. This is simply a place where we can talk honestly about the beautiful parts of life—and the painful ones too.
If you’ve ever experienced happiness and heartbreak at the same time, I’d love to hear your story. Like this video, subscribe to Coffee, Chaos and Grace, and share in the comments if you’re comfortable. Someone reading your story may need to know they aren’t the only one feeling two things at once.
Today I’m choosing to celebrate what’s beginning, grieve what has ended, and be grateful for the love that makes us feel both so deeply.
Thanks for pulling up a chair. There’s always room for one more at our coffee table. ☕
