In 1910, King Chulalongkorn of Siam died, and nearly a hundred royal wives lost the man their whole lives had been built around. Behind the walls of the Grand Palace in Bangkok, they had lived in a closed city of women, with its own guards, markets, and laws. So what happened to them when the king was gone?
This documentary follows the three paths they took. Queen Savang Vadhana outlived every one of her children and became the grandmother of two kings. Queen Saovabha, the first woman to rule Siam as regent, became queen mother. Princess Dara Rasmi of Chiang Mai did what almost no royal wife could: she went home to the north and never came back.
We also look at how the Siamese Revolution of 1932 sent members of the royal family into exile in Java and England, the surprising twist that decided who would inherit the throne, and the forgotten consorts who grew old in empty palace rooms. Along the way, we separate what the records show from the legends that have grown around this story, including the real account of Queen Sunanda's drowning in 1880.
