The coronation follows a night of traditional rites, including a torch-lit procession from Rwengoma Palace, a symbolic palace battle, the restoration of royal drums and other ceremonies marking the transition from the reign of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. Today’s programme includes a religious service at St John’s Cathedral, the raising of the Tooro Kingdom flag, the return of the kingdom anthem, the formal handover of authority and the crowning ceremony at Karuziika Palace. The coronation comes amid significant public interest in the succession. A last-minute court petition had sought to stop the enthronement, while the kingdom proceeded with the scheduled ceremonies. Thousands of people are expected in Fort Portal as Batooro and visitors witness this major royal and cultural occasion.
