The end of 120 Minutes? By the end of 1999, it looked like 120 Minutes was nearing the conclusion of its remarkable 15-year run. Longtime host Matt Pinfield and longtime MTV programming executive (and former 120 Minutes host) Lewis Largent had both left the network. The show was frequently preempted or delayed, and MTV was even selling entire episodes for single-artist promotions. Then, as the calendar turned to 2000, something changed. 120 Minutes was suddenly back on the schedule every week, and as nu-metal and mall punk increasingly dominated alternative radio and regular MTV, the show returned to its original mission: showcasing videos that had little chance of airing anywhere else. Once again, it became a home for indie rock, underground punk, electronic music, singer-songwriters, experimental acts, and more. The show was beginning to feel like itself again. Then, at the end of May 2000, it was gone. There was no farewell, no retrospective, and no final episode celebrating one of MTV's most influential programs. It simply vanished from the schedule. It looked like 120 Minutes had been cancelled for good. Or so we thought.
