Kanab, Utah, October 1975. Clint Eastwood was in the middle of shooting The Outlaw Josey Wales when a costume house sent a crate of factory-stamped hats and told him they were "close enough." He walked off the set without a word, borrowed a pickup and drove into town.
At the far end of the last row of a small-town harvest market sat a 72-year-old hatter with forty-one handmade hats and not one sale in five hours. A man two aisles over was selling factory hats for six dollars. On a separate stand sat one hat he would never sell.
What happened at that folding table over the next forty minutes ended up on movie screens all over the world.
