With rivers, birch forests, snowy villages and moonlit seas by painters of the same decades. ✨ Did you know? • Isaac Levitan, who was Jewish, was forced out of Moscow in 1879 when Jews were deported from the big cities; art lovers got him back. In 1892 Jews were expelled again. Three years later he painted Golden Autumn. He died in 1900, aged 39. (opening painting) • Ilya Repin had trouble finding haulers who would pose, because of a folk belief that being painted made the soul leave the body. Among his models were a former soldier, a painter and a defrocked priest, Kanin, who leads the line. Grand Duke Vladimir, the Tsar's son, bought the painting.
