Bigger brakes won't stop you faster, and wider tires are only half the answer. Here is what a
big brake kit actually buys you, what really decides your stopping distance, and the cheap
brake upgrade almost nobody has done.
Brakes don't stop the car. They turn speed into heat. A 3,500 lb car at 60 mph carries about
570,000 joules, and stopping it in four seconds means shedding heat at roughly 190 horsepower.
Every brake problem is a heat problem, and once your factory brakes can lock the wheel, more
braking torque can't shorten the first stop. What a big brake kit buys is the tenth stop.
In this video: pad fade vs fluid fade and how to tell them apart with your foot, green fade and
how to bed in new pads, why "warped rotors" are almost always pad deposits, what a bigger rotor
really adds (and the unsprung-mass cost), why brake fluid is a calendar item and old DOT 4 can
boil below fresh DOT 3, organic vs semi-metallic vs ceramic pads, why the tire is the ceiling
on every build, width vs compound, summer vs winter vs all-season, and the traction circle.
