If someone asked me what the most common bike I work on is, it would definitely be the Specialized Tarmac. Maybe it’s a Southern California thing, I’m not sure, but I really enjoy working on them. I think they’re beautiful bikes, and Specialized does a great job with all the different paint schemes they offer.
In this video, I’m swapping a Tarmac SL8 frame for an S-Works version with a really cool paint job.
Every bike build is a little different, so the way I approach taking an old bike apart and transferring everything to a new frame can vary depending on the situation. For this build, I didn’t want to disturb the brake setup because everything was already positioned exactly how the customer wanted it. Instead, I was able to leave the brakes attached to the handlebars and pull the cables out of the old frame. The tricky part is getting the front brake cable routed back through the new frame, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve.
I’ve also realized how much I enjoy the process of filming these videos, especially now that I’m shooting with my new Canon R6. I don’t think you need an expensive camera to make good content, but I really appreciate the image quality, and since I’ve always enjoyed quality gear, I’m having a lot of fun with it.
I’ve been getting a lot of great feedback lately, and it definitely motivates me to keep making these videos. They take a lot of time and can be stressful, especially when I’m working around customer deadlines and expectations. Sometimes I have to build and film an entire bike in one day, which can be a challenge, but I’m getting better at managing the process.
I really enjoy what I do, both working on these bikes and documenting the process along the way. I hope you guys enjoy watching as much as I enjoy making these videos.
