Alex Eala attended the Chanel Spring/Summer 2027 show at Paris Fashion Week
on October 5 — and her own fanbase split in half within hours. Here's what
that fight is actually about.
She walked into the Grand Palais in Chanel tweed, sat front row with her
mother Rizza Maniego Eala, and smiled for about ten seconds of footage.
One side called it a historic moment for Filipino tennis. The other side
asked why a 21-year-old who hasn't won a Grand Slam was in Paris at all.
But this wasn't the first time. The exact same argument happened at New York
Fashion Week, where Eala sat near Anna Wintour at Tory Burch, Michael Kors
and Calvin Klein. It happened over a $42 Nike shirt that sold out in minutes
while fans called the design low effort. It happened when the WTA named her
Star of the Hard Court Swing and the internet called it a popularity contest.
Four different fights. Same two camps. Every single time.
In this video I break down why that keeps happening — and why the two sides
aren't actually disagreeing about Alex Eala at all. They're running two
completely different scoreboards on the same player, and neither group has
realized the other one exists. One counts firsts. One counts Slams. Same
photograph, two correct answers.
We also cover the part most coverage skipped: Anna Wintour had already named
Eala alongside Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka before any invitation went
out. The room came to her.
