Then, witnessing the political unrest in British India and the tragedy of Jallianwala Bagh, the Amir resolved to wage war on British India to challenge the Durand Line. He portrayed this war as a sacred struggle, a Jihad waged against the enemies of the Muslims. In 1919, the Third Anglo-Afghan War began. Afghan armies launched a devastating assault across the Durand Line. The British forces, weakened by WWI, were caught off guard. Many homesick British troops were reluctant to fight and were offered incentives for deployment. WWI fatigue and the looming threat from the Soviet Union also cast their shadow over the war.
