4,500 years ago, the pyramids of Giza didn't look golden and stepped. They were smooth, polished and blindingly white. So where did all that white go — and why does one pyramid still wear a piece of it at the very top?
In this video we follow the story of the pyramids' lost casing: the fine white Tura limestone that once covered them, the travelers who still saw it shine thousands of years later, a sultan who spent eight months trying to tear down a pyramid, and the earthquake of 1303 that turned Giza into a ready-made quarry for medieval Cairo.
What you'll learn:
• Why the stepped stone you see today is actually the inside of the pyramids
• Where the white casing came from and how it was fitted
• What Herodotus and medieval travelers saw at Giza
• The scar on Menkaure's pyramid from 1196
• How the 1303 earthquake and a growing Cairo stripped the casing away
• What's left today: Khafre's cap, Menkaure's red granite and the last casing blocks of the Great Pyramid

Animation and reconstruction are illustrative. Some details, such as the gilded capstone and the casing reused in Cairo's mosques, are traditions or hypotheses and are presented as such.
