Ram V On The Comics That Pulled Him Into Writing | UNDER THE INFLUENCE

He might be a Vertigo kid, but he’s inspiring a whole generation of his own. We asked Ram V for comic book recommendations, and he sat us down for a masterclass. His love of storytelling in all its forms runs through everything he writes. There’s something almost otherworldly about the way his prose dances with visual art. His stories are poetic and deeply humanistic. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr, his collaboration with artist Filipe Andrade, helped make him a star in his own right by bringing Death herself down to our level. It tackles religion and mortality with an effervescent spirit, finding something extraordinary in the business of being human. The pair’s Rare Flavours followed with a love letter to food, film and the and the tricks they can play in our souls. At DC, he made Gotham gothic again with a celebrated run on Detective Comics, one of Batman’s most ambitious and intricate stories of the past decade. The New Gods took that same sensibility to a suitably cosmic stage. While browsing the shelves at Walt’s Comic Shop, Ram picked some of the finest comics you could hope to read, finding something to admire - and something to learn - in every one. Thanks for stopping by, Ram. We’re not quite the Hellblazer roster, but we’re glad you’re part of our cast now.
