How 3 Million Cocoons Are Cleaned at the Largest Mason Bee Harvest in the Country | Rent Mason Bees

Go behind the scenes at Rent Mason Bees as we harvest more than 3 MILLION mason bee cocoons during our annual Fall Harvest! As the largest solitary bee company in the country, Rent Mason Bees spends one week each fall opening thousands of nesting blocks, harvesting cocoons, and uncovering what's been happening inside mason bee nests throughout the season. What happens inside a mason bee house might surprise you! While nesting blocks may look healthy from the outside, inside we often discover healthy mason bee cocoons alongside pollen mites, Houdini flies, chalkbrood, parasitic wasps, and other threats. When those don’t get removed, they will linger until Spring when the mason bees emerge and will harm your next generation of bees. The harvest lasts just one week, but our work doesn't stop there! For the next 2–3 months, our team continues washing, inspecting, sorting, and preparing millions of mason bee cocoons for winter storage until they're ready to emerge next spring. Whether you rent your mason bees from us or care for your own, understanding proper mason bee maintenance is essential to raising healthy pollinators year after year.
