In this comparison, I demonstrate cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol and behenyl alcohol to see how they change texture, consistency, spread and skin feel. Each sample contains 5% fatty alcohol in the same carrier oil. I show the raw ingredients, melt and combine them with the oil, then compare the cooled samples in the beaker and on my skin. The differences surprised me! Cetyl stayed loose, cetearyl felt creamy and buttery, and stearyl developed the most firmness with a lovely pearlescent appearance. Behenyl wasn’t the firmest in the beaker, but felt the richest during application. If you make body butters, creams, lotions or scrubs, this demonstration offers a closer look at ingredients you might already have on your shelf—and some reasons to choose one over another. These are observations from this comparison; a complete formula can behave differently. This lesson is part of my Emollients, Occlusives & Barrier Lipids series. In the next video, I’ll compare 4 emulsifiers with oil and water. Which fatty alcohol do you reach for most, and what do you like about it? Let me know in the comments!
