In my clinic over the years I have seen many hypermobile patients, who have developed chronic pain and reduced function. Often they have received treatment from an array of practitioners, and this has usually involved strengthening exercises accompanied by the strong message of keeping their joint motion within safe parameters.
I have a LOT to say about this, but in this short video, I want to mention the absolute start point. This is the understanding that when your body has been a battle ground, and it hasn’t been a safe place to be, the first thing to establish is a trusting connection with it. Without that the patient cannot sense themselves. This in itself can lead to an unhelpful mix of inhibition and over activation in movement patterns.
To achieve that sense of safety, we need to set people up to feel safe enough to explore the experience, not just to cope with it. So keep loading and complexity low to begin with, so that a person can encounter their body with a sense of curiosity and confidence.
