Today Grandma lights the old wood oven and bakes two things in it — a
village pizza made with her own corn, sausage and ham, and a big round
loaf of rustic homemade bread. By the end of the day the beetroot is
boiled and sealed in jars, and the house is ready for winter.
The garden is already ploughed. The jars from autumn are already
closed. What is left now is to heat the house and get through the cold
months, and in this village that still means doing everything with
your own hands.
While the oven heats, Grandma works the dough. Grandpa rolls beeswax
candles, brings beetroot up from the cellar, digs fresh horseradish in
the garden and washes it at the well. The chickens are fed and shut in
for the night. Felix the cat supervises all of it, as usual.
When the pizza comes out of the oven they eat it hot, standing there,
and talk about what still has to be done before the snow. Then the
bread goes in. Nothing here is bought, and nothing is hurried.
Thank you for spending this day in our village with us.
