4K Virtual Hike North Head Trail at Signal Hill in St. John's Newfoundland

Located at Signal Hill with a rich history, this trail is scenic as well! The rugged and steep trail shows evidence of being used since the 1500s. It's not very long (just 3.5 km round trip, but it is very steep down. And what goes down must go up! Because of the significance that Signal Hill has in the defense of Canada and communications history, it stands to reason that the trail was used as a way to monitor the coast and help protect the bay. Signal Hill was established in the 17th century. The last battle in North America of the Seven Years War was fought here in 1762. It's known as the Battle of Signal Hill. Flag communications were used during the 17th century until 1960, that is how it got its name "Signal Hill." It became the citadel for St. John's in the late part of the 18th century. In the 19th century it served as a lookout during the Napoleonic and American Civil wars. It received the first transatlantic wireless communication by Morse code in 1901. Cabot Tower was built during the later years of the 19th century to honor Queen Victoria and the 400th anniversary of the landfall of John Cabot. In December of 1901 the first transatlantic wireless communication transmission from the United Kingdom was received at Signal Hill. During World War II the United States maintained anti aircraft guns here as well. Today there are daily firings of a canon at noon each day. There are also several trails for hiking when you visit. Currently there are a number of trails offering stunning views of the harbor and village. At 61 years of age, I knew that I had to start my bucket list now or I would never do it!
