9 resets, by name and date. Jean Grey 1980. Barry Allen 1985. Superman 1992. Bucky 2005. One More Day 2007. The New 52 in 2011. Secret Wars 2015. Krakoa 2019. Look at what was actually reset in each one and it is never the death - it is a marriage, a successor, a country, a consequence. Then the mechanism, which is not lazy writing. A superhero is a trademark, and a trademark has to be used to stay yours. Layer the film slate on top, then the trade paperback, then the fact that shops order non-returnable - and the ending is not forbidden by a person. It is forbidden by a shelf. Then the five books that were allowed to stop, and what they all had in common. And then the part nobody does: I write three endings. Spider-Man, Batman, Superman.
