It hunts giant squid 2 kilometres down in total darkness. It’s the loudest animal on Earth, it has the biggest brain of any animal that has ever lived, and in 1820 one of them sank a whaling ship. So what would you actually do if a sperm whale came straight at you?
In this video we go deep with the sperm whale. We cover how it hunts colossal squid with sound, the clicks that can reach around 230 decibels, the coda “alphabet” scientists decoded off Dominica, and the real story of the Essex, the ship that inspired Moby-Dick. Then we get to the twist: the real danger has always gone the other way, and this predator might be one of the ocean’s most important gardeners.
