Why Have Only 5,000 People Seen Real AI?

Andrej Karpathy says only about 5,000 people have seen what AI can really do... and most people are judging it by a free chatbot. Here's his AI funnel, tier by tier. His napkin math: about 6 billion people have barely touched an LLM. 1 to 2 billion use free ChatGPT-style chatbots like a better Google search. About 20 million professionals use frontier tools like Claude Code and Codex to finish projects that used to take weeks. And about 5,000 people have internal access to systems the rest of us can't use yet. He says the gap comes down to three things... ambition (the size of the problems you bring), jaggedness (AI is strongest where work is digital and checkable), and access (free, paid, internal). My take... I'm not a developer, and I build apps I sell by sitting down on a Sunday morning and talking to my AI. The value moved to the idea.
