Voters are asking ChatGPT how to vote in the 2026 midterms. This is how to use AI in elections without letting it vote for you: give it a rubric and make it show its work.

NPR ran a story on October 5th about people using ChatGPT to work through their ballot. Good instinct, wrong question. These models tend to agree with whoever is typing, so asking "who should I vote for" just hands you a new party line. The fix is to build a baseline first... who you are, what you value, why... and then point the AI at the record: voting history, bills, ads, funders. Scorecard against your values, with receipts.
I show you why this matters with a 4-hour debate I didn't have time to watch. The comment sections crowned a winner. I had my agent judge the transcript point by point, had a second agent check it, and ran the comments from several channels. The scorecard leaned the other way. Same mechanism as voting the party line: you adopt the verdict of the crowd you happen to be standing in.
Then the part that explains all of it. Anthony Downs called it rational ignorance in 1957: being informed cost hours and changed nothing, so the party line was the rational shortcut. AI just flipped that trade. 30 minutes now buys what used to take a week... if you set it up and make it show its work.

Nothing here tells you who to vote for. This is my own commentary on using AI as a research tool. Check the sources yourself and make your own decisions.
