Not every workplace issue can be resolved by the person who first receives it. This lesson explains how to recognise when a matter should be escalated and how to do so professionally. You will learn about the boundaries of authority, including limits relating to refunds, financial decisions, contractual commitments, legal matters, policy exceptions and confidential information. The lesson also identifies common escalation triggers, such as formal complaints, unresolved or confrontational situations, requests to speak with a manager and cases where information is incomplete. It stresses the importance of following organisational procedures so that decisions remain consistent, risks are managed and accurate records are maintained. You will also explore how to communicate an escalation clearly, reassure the customer, set realistic expectations and explain who will take responsibility and when they will follow up. Effective escalation is presented as a responsible professional action that protects customers, employees and the organisation.
