Dressed For DEATH On The Titanic. His Mistress In Boat 9. His Wife Got A MESSAGE: Ben Guggenheim
On the night the Titanic went down, a millionaire named Benjamin Guggenheim changed into evening clothes and waited for the end like a gentleman. That is the version America printed in April 1912, and the version Hollywood has filmed ever since. But the man in that evening suit had walked away from one of the largest fortunes in the country. The woman he helped into lifeboat nine was a singer from Paris, not his wife. When his brothers finally opened his books, the estate took almost four years to settle. A claim from a woman in Italy arrived with a signed agreement. And his last words to his wife passed through the one brother who ran the fortune he had left behind. It all started with a steward knocking on a stateroom door just after midnight.
