Nikon just dropped the Z5IIC — a stripped-down, viewfinder-less full-frame camera at $1,399.95, shipping mid-October. But before you get excited about the price tag, let's talk about what Nikon actually cut to hit that number. The good, quickly: 24.5MP full-frame sensor, EXPEED 7 processor (same chip in the Z9 and Z8), 7.5 stops of IBIS, 10-type subject detection AF including fish, N-RAW internal recording, and a genuinely aggressive price — about $1,100 less than Sony's a7C II. Now here's everything Nikon left out to get there: ❌ No EVF, period. This isn't a minor compromise — you're composing on the rear screen only, full stop. Shooting outdoors in Miami sun without an electronic viewfinder is a real workflow problem, not a nitpick. ❌ Single SD card slot. The Z5II has dual slots. For paid work — weddings, events, anything you can't reshoot — shooting on a single card with no backup redundancy is a genuine risk, not just an inconvenience. ❌ Low-res screen. Only 1.04M dots on the 3.2" vari-angle display — noticeably softer than the Z5II's panel, and with no viewfinder to fall back on, that screen is doing all the work. ❌ 4K60 is cropped. Full-width 4K caps out at 30p. Want 60p in 4K? You're locked into a 1.5x DX crop — a real limitation if you shoot handheld run-and-gun video. ❌ No ProRes, no REDCODE RAW. You get N-RAW and H.265 10-bit — fine, but nowhere near the professional codec flexibility serious video shooters expect in 2026. ❌ No Ethernet. A non-issue for most, but a real gap for tethered studio or event workflows. ❌ Modest battery life. Rated around 350–390 shots or ~85 minutes of video — not class-leading. ❌ It's the same sensor as a 16-month-old camera. This isn't new tech — it's the Z5II's guts in a smaller shell. No viewfinder, no second card slot, and a cheaper screen is the actual cost of that $450 discount. In this video, I go hands-on with every spec, compare it directly against the standard Z5II and Sony's a7C II, and break down who this camera is actually for — and who should skip it entirely and spend the extra $450 on the Z5II instead. #nikon #NikonZ5IIC #nikonz5ii #camerareview #fullframecamera #mirrorlessphotography #CameraGear #photographygear #NikonZmount #cameranews #EntryLevelCamera #PhotographyIndustry #videographygear #cameracomparison #NikonVsSony #budgetcamera #CameraReviews2026 #sony #sonyalpha
