Erum Cinema & Galaxy Cinema Karachi | The Golden Era of Old Karachi Cinemas

Do you remember the golden era of Karachi cinemas? In this nostalgic documentary, we revisit the forgotten story of Erum Cinema and Galaxy Cinema in Liaquatabad, Karachi — two cinemas that were once an important part of Karachi's vibrant film culture. Erum Cinema opened in 1974 with the Pakistani film “Tum Salamat Raho.” It was known as a fully air-conditioned, high-quality cinema with a comfortable environment for moviegoers and families. Right beside Erum Cinema was Galaxy Cinema, a smaller mini cinema that opened with “Miss Happy.” Galaxy became known for screening films after their successful runs at larger cinemas. This video brings back memories of classic Pakistani films, old cinema posters, hand-painted billboards, film stills, vintage Karachi streets, old buses, friends, families and the unforgettable cinema-going culture of the 1970s and 1980s. We also remember films watched at Erum Cinema, including Aaina, Ek Gunah Aur Sahi, Palki and Naya Suraj, while Galaxy Cinema is remembered for films including Aaj Aur Kal, Nahin Abhi Nahin, Jadoo and Khubsurat. Aaj Aur Kal achieved a remarkable Solo Silver Jubilee run at Galaxy Cinema, while the film also completed a Diamond Jubilee overall at its main cinema. The story then takes a tragic turn in 1986, when Erum and Galaxy Cinema were set on fire during the violent unrest in Karachi. The cinemas remained in a damaged condition for some time before the location was later converted into Humsafar Marriage Hall and eventually became a furniture market.
