What happened to the girl who had forgotten to read and write? | BBC News India

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut schools across India, Radhika Kumari lost some of her reading and writing skills. In her village in Jharkhand, where internet access was limited, learning stopped when the school closed. Five years later, BBC News India returns to meet Radhika. She has passed Class 10, but continues to struggle with basic learning. Her story raises difficult questions about what happens to children who fall behind, and whether India’s education system is helping them catch up. With overcrowded classrooms, severe teacher shortages and limited support for struggling students, Radhika’s experience reveals the challenges facing children in some of India’s most disadvantaged communities. Watch this BBC News India report on the lasting impact of Covid-era school closures and the wider learning crisis in India.
