Arday denied plagiarism, and Liverpool John Moores University did not uphold the allegations. I cannot know his intentions or reconstruct his viva. This is a judgment about the publicly available thesis, rather than the whole person. Jason Arday’s death and the racist abuse surrounding the controversy demand humanity, but they do not remove legitimate questions about evidence, academic standards and institutional responsibility.
