Hidden on a triangular headland above its own loch in the hills of Nithsdale, Morton Castle was built to be nearly impossible to find and believe me it still is. Once the seat of the powerful Earls of Morton, it stood as a comfortable stronghold echoing Caerlaverock Castle, until King James VI had it sacked in 1588 to crush the Douglas family's power for good. Abandoned within a century, its stone scavenged, it now stands alone above the water it once used as a shield.
