Was Emily St. John Mandel inspired by Kate Bush's The Ninth Wave when she wrote The Glass Hotel in 2020? Kate Bush's The Ninth Wave, the conceptual second half of her 1985 album Hounds of Love, tells the story of a woman lost at sea who drifts between memories, dreams and hallucinations as she struggles to survive. Emily St. John Mandel's The Glass Hotel finds protagonist Vincent Smith going through similar circumstances. From And Dream of Sheep and Under Ice, to Waking the Witch, Watching You Without Me, Hello Earth and The Morning Fog, the structure and imagery of The Ninth Wave seem to have some remarkable parallels with Vincent's story in The Glass Hotel. Is The Glass Hotel an unofficial novelization of The Ninth Wave, or am I simply making tenuous links between completely unrelated texts? Let's dive in and find out.
