A silent band does not always mean my station has failed—it may simply mean I am listening in the wrong place at the wrong time. In this video, I explain how time of day, distance, solar activity, and the ionosphere determine which amateur radio band gives me the best chance of making contact. I cover why receivers can sound dead, how propagation changes throughout the day, and when I choose 80, 40, 20, or the higher bands. I also explain how I use propagation forecasts without relying on them blindly, avoid the favourite-band trap, and perform a practical five-minute band check before troubleshooting my equipment. 0:00 Why your receiver sounds dead 1:34 Bands are changing routes 3:09 The ionospheric frequency window 5:30 Nighttime bands: 80 and 40 8:04 Why 20 metres works 10:38 The high-band solar gamble 13:12 Choosing bands throughout the day 15:33 Using propagation forecasts wisely 17:57 Break the favourite-band habit 20:20 The five-minute band check #HamRadio #AmateurRadio #RadioPropagation #Ionosphere #DXing #HFRadio
