Children’s books might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about family history, but they’ve become one of my favorite ways to help children connect with the stories of their family. In this video, I’m sharing some of my favorite children’s books about names, homes, grandparents, food and traditions, immigration, moving, and belonging—and how each of these themes can open the door to meaningful family stories. The idea is simple: *Read. Connect. Share.* Read a story together. Connect something in the book to your own family. Share the memory or family story it brings to mind. A book about a name might lead to the story behind your child’s name. A house might remind you of your childhood home. A grandmother in a garden might bring back a memory of someone you love. And a story about moving might open a conversation about the journeys that brought your family to where they are today. You don’t need to turn Storytime into a family history lesson. Sometimes all it takes is saying, That reminds me of a story…” In this video, I share books including Alma and How She Got Her Name, My Name Is Ai Lin, Farmhouse, The Little House, Grandpa, My Nana’s Garden, Bread Days, Home in a Lunchbox, Watercress, Navigating Night, The Blue House, A Dozen Cousins, I’ll Go and Come Back, and *With You in Spirit. Welcome to Where Their Stories Lead, a place for gathering the stories of yesterday, treasuring the memories of today, and carrying them into tomorrow.
