Rethinking Pastoral Development: What Government Needs to Fix,

During the practitioner's summer school, a collaborative multi-stakeholder discussion comprising of the government gave direct recommendations to government on improving development initiatives in pastoral and dryland regions. The conversation moves from community engagement, governments need to identify what communities are already building before rolling out competing projects, and treat public participation as genuine, not a checkbox, to government's role as an active coordinator rather than a passive actor. It then turns to evidence-based policymaking, arguing for dedicated research budgets and trained local researchers, and closes with a hard look at budget accountability: policies that sit unimplemented for years, and livestock economy funding that keeps getting stripped out during supplementary budgeting despite being the backbone of pastoral economies.
