DEPOSITION OF JOHN M. LORENZ, MD Defense Expert Witness — Neonatal Care Williams v. Onasanya State Court of Fulton County, Georgia — Civil Action No. 13EV016865H John M. Lorenz, MD, is a physician who has practiced since 1976 and works at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. He was retained by the defense as an expert witness. He is questioned about the materials he reviewed, physician coverage of a neonatal intensive care unit, respiratory distress syndrome, the November 12–13, 2011 nursing and respiratory therapy notes, the resuscitation record, and umbilical catheter placement. Dr. Lorenz is not a party to this case. Video-recorded on December 11, 2015, in New York, New York, before a court reporter. Counsel for the plaintiff examined the witness; counsel for Dr. Onasanya also appeared. A deposition is sworn testimony given before trial and recorded for use in litigation. BACKGROUND Keyondria Williams, individually and as mother, next friend, and administrator of Kayden Henderson, brought this suit against Tenet Healthcare Corporation; Tenet South Fulton, Inc., doing business as South Fulton Medical Center; Babatunde I. Onasanya, MD; and a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant, nurses, and a respiratory therapist. By the time of this deposition, Dr. Onasanya was the remaining defendant. The complaint alleges that Kayden Henderson was born at South Fulton Medical Center on November 8, 2011, and was admitted to its neonatal intensive care unit with breathing problems. The complaint alleges that the defendants failed to diagnose and adequately treat his neonatal pneumonia, that his antibiotics were stopped despite worsening chest X-rays, and that umbilical catheters were misplaced. The complaint alleges that early on November 13, 2011, he required resuscitation, including about 45 minutes of chest compressions, and was then transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he was diagnosed with severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. This deposition may contain allegations, opinions, and disputed testimony that have not been proved in court. Questions may contain assumptions that the witness does not accept.
