Wie schmeckt der Coffee süße” from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Coffee Cantata BWV 211 composed in 1734 and was to be performed in Zimmermann's coffee house in Leipzig. It is a playful ode to one of life’s simplest pleasures — coffee. Light, witty, and irresistibly charming, it captures the voice of a young woman delighting in her daily ritual, gently teasing the boundaries between indulgence and social convention. Beneath its humor lies a subtle portrait of independence and desire, wrapped in Bach’s elegant musical language. This performance brings the aria into a more intimate sound world, with the warmth of the theorbo and the delicate color of the recorder offering a fresh perspective on the original instrumentation. Soprano Magdalena Pikuła, a member of the Warsaw Chamber Opera ensemble, brings both grace and a sense of playful storytelling to the role, balancing vocal clarity with expressive nuance. Maria Wilgos, one of the most distinctive young lutenists of her generation in Poland, shapes the harmonic foundation with sensitivity and depth, allowing the continuo to breathe and speak. The ensemble is guided by Wolfgang Kraemer, a German/ New Zealand recorder player, who is also in charge of the Pettman National Junior Academy of Music and the Akaroa International Music Festival in New Zealand.
