Johann Sebastian Bach
1685 - 1750
Aria from the Cantata: "Süsser Trost, mein Jesus kömmt", BWV 151
Magdalena Pikuła, soprano
Wolfgang Kraemer, recorder (flûte de voix)
Maria Wilgos, theorbo
Bach composed the work in Leipzig for the Third Day of Christmas, and it was first performed on 27 December 1725.
The aria begins with a gentle motion of a lullaby. Its shimmering, transparent atmosphere dominates the entire work. The flute part is richly ornamented, tracing almost arabesque-like figures that extend and embellish the soprano’s melodic lines. The da capo aria’s contrasting middle section introduces a striking change of character: an ecstatic dance of joy, combining elements of the gavotte and the gigue. Driven by agile chains of triplets, the music develops an exuberant melodic flow that contrasts vividly with the serene lyricism of the opening section.
Soprano Magdalena Pikuła, a member of the Warsaw Chamber Opera ensemble, brings both grace and a sense of playful storytelling to the role, balancing vocal clarity with expressive nuance.
Maria Wilgos, one of the most distinctive young lutenists of her generation in Poland, shapes the harmonic foundation with sensitivity and depth, allowing the continuo to breathe and speak.
The ensemble is guided by Wolfgang Kraemer, a German/ New Zealand recorder player, who is also in charge of the Pettman National Junior Academy of Music and the Akaroa International Music Festival in New Zealand.
