From Food Insecurity to Food on the Table: A Family's Story from Lahj

For years, Najibah and her family in Koud Zaghbary Village, Lahj Governorate, struggled to make ends meet. With no regular source of income and a family member living with a disability, there were days when they survived on just one or two meals, and at times had nothing to eat. The vegetables they grew in their small garden helped, but it was not enough to sustain the family. Things began to change when the family received support through a project funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) and implemented by CARE in coordination with local authorities and community stakeholders. Through unconditional cash assistance, home gardening support, agricultural inputs, drip irrigation systems, and technical training, the family improved its farming practices, increased harvests, and diversified its sources of income. The support also enabled them to establish a small grocery shop, creating a more stable livelihood and helping them invest in their children's future. Overall, the project helped 14,763 people from 2,619 households improve their access to food and livelihood opportunities across Lahj and Taiz Governorates. Najibah's story reflects the challenges faced by millions of people across Yemen. After more than a decade of crisis, conflict, economic decline, and climate-related shocks, 22.3 million people require humanitarian assistance and protection services, while 18.3 million people face acute food insecurity. Across the country, families continue to struggle with rising food prices, limited livelihood opportunities, and reduced access to essential services.
