Pompeii is not just one monument—it is an entire ancient city. On a scorching summer day, we explore the Archaeological Park of Pompeii beneath Mount Vesuvius. What surprised me most was the scale: ancient Pompeii covers approximately 66 hectares, with around 44 hectares excavated. We walk along long Roman streets, explore ruined houses and courtyards, and step inside rooms where vivid frescoes still survive. The details make Pompeii feel like a real city rather than simply a collection of ruins. In AD 79, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii beneath volcanic material, preserving an extraordinary record of Roman life. The intense heat and huge distances made this a demanding visit—but they also made the true size of Pompeii impossible to ignore.
