In 1971, a fire truck rolled into a convention hall in St. Louis, and nobody there had ever seen one like it. It wasn’t red. It was lime. Within a few years, lime fire trucks were showing up all across America, in Dallas, in Florida, around Boston and Miami, and at airports nationwide. The science seemed to back it up. Red is surprisingly hard for the human eye to see at dusk, and several studies found that lime trucks were involved in far fewer accidents. So why did almost every town quietly go back to red? In this video, we look at the whole story: the eye doctor and volunteer firefighter who started it, the small Illinois town that took the first risk, the New York experiment that changed everything, and the reasons tradition won in the end. Did your town ever have a lime fire truck? Tell me where in the comments. I read every one of them.
