Can you control your shoulder movement all the way to the end of your range?
In Part 2 of this infraspinatus strengthening series, Ray from Awareness Training demonstrates how to work this rotator cuff muscle in its inner—or shortened—range, near the end of shoulder external rotation.
The goal is to develop strength and control in a position that can easily get overlooked.
💪 WHAT IS THE INFRASPINATUS?
One of the four muscles that make up your rotator cuff.
Located on the back of your shoulder blade, below the spine of the scapula.
Connects your shoulder blade to your upper arm bone.
Helps rotate your upper arm outward and supports shoulder stability.
🎯 WHAT DOES “INNER RANGE” MEAN?
Inner range refers to the position where a muscle is shortened. For the infraspinatus, this occurs as the shoulder moves into external rotation.
This is different from internal rotation: we’re strengthening an external rotator in its shortened position.
🦴 WHY WORK ON END-RANGE STRENGTH?
Being able to reach a position and being able to actively control it are different skills. Strength training can produce improvements specific to the positions you practice.
Working in a comfortable end range gives you an opportunity to:
Build strength near the end of the movement.
Practice controlling the position without relying on momentum.
Develop awareness of how your shoulder moves.
Complement strengthening through the rest of your range.
💡 FORM & TECHNIQUE
Follow the setup and arm position demonstrated in the video.
Begin with light resistance—or no added weight.
Keep your torso steady and avoid shrugging your shoulder.
Move slowly rather than swinging your arm.
Work within a comfortable, pain-free range.
Avoid forcing your shoulder farther just to lift higher.
Small, controlled movements can be challenging. Focus on the quality of your movement rather than the amount of weight you lift.
