What Comes Next? Shape Patterns for 4 and 5 Year Olds

A red circle, a blue square, a red circle, a blue square - and then a bracket slides along underneath and shows you the same little group, again and again. That little group is the rule. Once you can see it, you can say what comes next anywhere on the line - even in the middle. WHAT THIS TEACHES Most pattern videos only ask "what comes next?" at the end of a row, and a child can answer that by copying the last two shapes without ever noticing the repeating group. This one puts the group itself on screen. A bracket closes around the first repeat, travels along and closes around the next, and the next - so the repeating unit becomes a thing you can see rather than a thing you are told about. Then every round asks twice: once at the end of the line, and once for a shape missing from the MIDDLE, which can only be answered by someone who knows where the group begins. Recognising and continuing repeating patterns is one of the strongest early predictors of later maths, and it is a skill that grows from simple AB patterns into longer units at exactly this age.
