Letter Sounds K L M N O - Preschool Phonics for 4 and 5 Year Olds

Some sounds you can hold until you run out of breath. Some are over before you have started. This episode measures the difference — a line grows out of each letter for exactly as long as its sound lasts, and it is the same ruler every time. Every alphabet video gives each letter the same beat of the same song: a, buh, cuh, duh. That is tidy, and it is not true. You can hold mmmmm, llll and nnnn for as long as you like; you cannot hold /k/ at all, which is why saying it on its own forces you to hang a little "uh" on the end that is no part of the sound. That difference is the whole engine of blending — a child who can stretch the first sound of a word has time to reach the second one and hear m-a-n become "man". A song cannot show it. A ruler can. So M, L, N and O each draw a long calm line most of the way across the screen, and K draws a stub and stops dead with a full stop on the end of it. WHAT THIS TEACHES The sounds of K, L, M, N and O, and how to find them at the START of a word. Each round works the harder way round: the thing appears first with no letter anywhere, the written word arrives with a hole where its first letter goes, and the letter is the ANSWER to a question rather than the thing being illustrated. Sound-to-letter is the half that transfers to reading and writing. Along the top, a 26-place alphabet wall — the same one from the earlier episodes. A to J are already written in. K to O are empty boxes, and each one gets filled in as it is learned. At the end all fifteen letters we have learned so far are sorted onto two boards: nine you can hold, six that stop.
