In 1788, James Hutton touched a seam of rock at Salisbury Crags that proved the Earth was far older than anyone believed, and made Edinburgh the birthplace of modern geology. Every heritage board since has called Arthur's Seat an ancient volcano and treated Hutton's discovery as part of it. But the rock he touched turns out not to belong to that volcano at all, and nobody has ever found where it actually came from. In this video: • John Playfair and James Hutton's 1788 discovery at Salisbury Crags • Why the "ancient volcano" story on the heritage boards oversimplifies the geology • The twenty-million-year gap between the summit lavas and the Salisbury Crags sill • The still-missing feeder dyke that no survey has ever located • The competing theories behind the name Arthur's Seat • The seventeen miniature coffins found on the hill in 1836 Chapters: 0:00 Hutton's discovery 1:22 The hill above Edinburgh 4:04 Neptunism and fire 7:01 Defining a volcano 11:58 The missing feeder dyke 14:55 The disputed name 21:08 Ice age and crag and tail 25:44 Modern investigations Sources: • British Geological Survey - Edinburgh district memoir dated the Salisbury Crags sill • Sir Archibald Geikie, The Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain (1897) - first noted the sill's distinct chemistry • Murray Macgregor, 1932 Geological Survey map - traced dykes, found none linked to the sill • University of St Andrews, 2019 paper in the Scottish Journal of Geology - revisited sill geochemistry, left the source unresolved • Historic Environment Scotland - scheduled monument documentation protects the site from drilling Visiting: Historic Environment Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council jointly manage Holyrood Park; look for the 1988 plaque marking Hutton's Section on the Radical Road.
