The most abundant sphingolipid in the plasma membrane of plants is Glycosyl InositoPhosphoryl Ceramide (GIPC). Here, Sebastien Mongrand of CNRS, France discusses the biophysical analysis of GIPC properties and interactions with phytosterols, and show that GIPC increases the thickness and electronegativity of model membranes.
