On March 4, 1921, a nine-winged flying boat carrying 300 kilograms of sandbags slammed into the surface of Lake Maggiore. Over the next century, that exact scene repeated itself five times—each time involving an even larger aircraft.
From Giovanni Caproni’s nine-winged wooden leviathan and Claude Dornier’s 12-engined flying hotel, to the Convair B-36 with backward-facing propellers, the Bristol Brabazon that wiped an entire English village off the map, the 640-ton Antonov An-225 Mriya, and the 117-meter Stratolaunch Roc, engineers repeatedly pushed the limits of flight.
Yet, the answer to what actually limits the size of an airplane shifted six times across a single century—and physics ceased to be the governing factor remarkably early on. Today, the largest aircraft in human history is being constructed in Colorado, designed to lift three times less weight than the record holder from 1988. Discover the incredible 100-year technological race of aviation giants and learn why scale is no longer measured in tons, but in volume.
